Mass Spectrometry – Multiple Positions

(Open rank – ranks ranging from Postdoctoral Fellow to Senior Staff Scientist)

The Mass Spectrometry Center in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is searching for a creative, motivated, and disciplined candidates. The search is an OPEN RANK search where experience levels appropriate to varying job ranks ranging from Postdoctoral Fellow to Senior Scientist will be considered. Rank of position to be determined by education and experience. These positions are responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. The candidates are expected to contribute technical leadership in mass spectrometry and analytical topics in their area of expertise. For consideration for all job titles, candidate’s research specialization / experience MUST be in mass spectrometry with a focus one or more of the following areas: analytical chemistry, metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, biomarkers, drug analysis, protein structure, quantitative mass spectrometry or mass spectrometry imaging. Outstanding candidates will be considered in ANY area of expertise. Experience and record of accomplishment in mass spectrometry via peer-reviewed publications is highly desirable. Applicant must be self-motivated, methodical, detail-oriented, and possess excellent oral and written skills. Applicant must be interested in participating in a collaborative environment.

Current recruitment foci:

Mass Spectrometry Imaging (open rank). The selected candidates would work on one or more of the following projects: mass spectrometry imaging of bacterial metabolites in lung infection models; mass spectrometry imaging lipid biomarkers and therapeutic compounds in radiation damage models; mass spectrometry imaging neurotransmitters and lipids in a brain injury model; development of DESI- and/or MALDI-MSI methodology. Experience with Synapt and FT-ICR instrumentation a plus.

LC-MS/MS-based metabolomics/lipidomics and targeted quantification (open rank). The selected candidate would work on projects involving one or more of the following topic areas: untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics; targeted LC-MS/MS quantification of small molecules and lipids; assay development and validation (both targeted and untargeted); biomarker studies. Experience with triple quadrupole and Synapt instrumentation a plus.

Clinical and GLP Analyses (open rank). The selected candidate would work on projects involving one or more of the following topic areas: targeted LC-MS/MS quantification of small molecules and drug molecules in clinical studies; assay development and validation; pharmacokinetic analyses; participate in establishing and then managing Good Laboratory Practice procedures and conducting Good Laboratory Practice analyses. Experience with Waters triple quadrupole instrumentation and method development/validation a plus. Previous experience with GLP a plus, willingness to learn GLP is a requirement of this position.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Protein Mass Spectrometry. The research project involves the characterization of post-translational modifications (PTMs) of the apical sodium–bile acid transporter (ASBT) protein which is a membrane protein responsible for the uptake of bile acids in the intestine. Protein mass spectrometry experience and experience characterizing PTMs is desired. The ideal candidate has expertise in eukaryotic membrane protein expression systems (including cell-free systems), protein engineering, purification, scale-up, reconstitution as well as functional and kinetic transport assays.

Possible job ranks for the available position include:

Postdoctoral Fellow: Applicants should have a Bachelor’s and Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a related field of study with 0-5 yrs of experience past Ph.D. degree conferral. Research Scientist: Ph.D with 3-5 yrs of experience. Lead Research Scientist: Ph.D with 5-8 years of experience. Senior Research Scientist: Ph.D with 6-10 years of experience.  *All ranks require experience in mass spectrometry. Stated experience ranges are guidelines where rank would be determined by each candidate’s education and experience.  **BS and MS levels scientists with experience would also be welcome based upon consideration of a unique combination of education and experience. ***Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
