EW Meds™

Nearly 75% of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) are bitter. Most oral dosage forms, like capsules and tablets, are specifically designed to minimize taste perception of the API and avoid concerns about medication palatability. However, infants and younger kids often struggle to take such solid dosage forms. Furthermore, masking techniques available for liquid formulations often fall short, making them more likely to have poor palatability. The direct link between poor palatability and non-adherence is well documented. Therefore, it is essential to assess which medications are known to be poorly tolerated because of taste, find alternatives that may be more favorable, and highlight home taste-masking interventions to help mitigate poor palatability.

As pharmacists, we can help to make medications more manageable for kids. To increase awareness about medication palatability, we created the Ew Meds List™ — a comprehensive list of poor tasting liquid medications and evidence-based recommendations to mask poor palatability.
