Kathryn Anne Walker, PharmD, BCPS, CPE is an associate professor in the Department of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research (P-SHOR) at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and a pain/palliative care clinical specialist at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital (MUMH).
About Dr. Walker:
Dr. Walker developed a pharmacist-based pain management consult team at MUMH. She is also part of the team designing and implementing an interdisciplinary palliative medicine consult team at MUMH ten years ago and has served as the leader for clinical outcomes, research and education along with her clinical role.
Dr. Walker’s passion for alleviating suffering at the end-of-life includes a major focus on pain management and drives her efforts in clinical practice, research and education. Her research interests include impact of palliative care services, appropriate medication use at end of life, and education of health professionals in providing quality end of life care. She was the first MedStar pharmacist to be chosen to complete the Medstar Health Medical Education Research Certificate Program sponsored by American Medical Association. She was also in the first cohort of providers to become Certified Pain Educators.
Dr. Walker completed one of the only specialty residencies at the time in palliative care at University of Maryland after completing her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She is the past president of the Maryland Pain Initiative (MPI) and has served on the Board of Directors for MPI and Maryland Society of Health System Pharmacists for several years.
