The O-S Lab investigates how iron contributes to bacterial pathogenesis.
Shown to the right are three different clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa growing on an agar plate containing the metal binding indicator dye chrome azurol s (CAS). This media is used to evaluate secretion of siderophores produced by P. aeruginosa to scavenge iron. This particular plate shows how different clinical strains of P. aeruginosa (making up different parts of the smiley) secrete varying levels of siderophore, which may be reflective of the type of infection from which they were isolated.
